Dear IoT fellows,

The umbrella term P2M* stands for ”Phone-to-Machine”. P2M* modules are a family of products enabling long-distance wireless control of remote (electrical) devices. For a maximum level of workability of P2M*-enabled solutions and installed deployments

  • legacy mobile phones are used as a remote control handset and
  • P2M* modules allow user interaction via standard SMS messages.

P2M* modules are made for use cases requiring interactions with a remote object, especially if they are

  • occasional – either on user request or driven by an event or
  • periodic, but infrequent and
  • only small data packets will be exchanged
  • –> The “OIS” rule: Occasional (triggered by local event or on user request) or Infrequent transmissions of Small data

Typical P2M* applications are requiring either

  • monitoring of certain remote parameters or remote detection of a certain condition or
  • remote control of a piece of equipment, a function, an indicator, etc.

Sample P2M* use cases:

  • to turn “things” on/off, e.g.
    • a display, illumination, heaters, pumps, meters/sensors, locks, an electric fence, etc.
    • e.g. at home or in industrial or farming or POS/retail sites or facilities, open-air or inside buildings, etc.
    • or any kind of electrical device which is relevant for a customer-specific application
  • to activate a device function
  • daily report of the fill level of a vending machine
  • to authorize somebody to use a service, e.g. by sending a transaction number (TAN)
  • to grant physical access, e.g. by unlocking a room
  • to display a (small) piece of information, e.g. a value or a price or a headcount or indicate a certain condition, e.g. an alert
  •  to alert about an unexpected or unwanted event, e.g., detect if an open door or if an object has been moved.

Primarily, P2M* modules have been designed to meet requirements of professional system integrators or OEM customers – mainly for evaluation purposes or as a reference design. But of course, they can also be used by the European maker community to address DIY projects – for personal use. A comprehensive, P2M* Reference Manual contains all technical information how to install, how to integrate an P2M module, and how to administrate users. This manual can be downloaded at any time in advance http://heins-iot.com/p2m/manual-and-faqs/. This page also contains a collection of frequently asked questions (“FAQ”) of interested customers.

An up-to-date overview of all P2M* offers (modules, starter kits and demo kit), prices and online shipping options are provided here: http://heins-iot.com/p2m/modules-and-kits/
